Taddeo Gaddi
Madonna of Humility

Circa 1390
Tempera on panel
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The distinguishing feature of a "Madonna of Humility" image is that the Virgin Mary sits on the ground. The other features – the blue mantle, the age-appropriate clothing on the child, the crown and angels, etc. – are all common to Madonna and Child images generally.

The artist has no problem picturing the bodies of the two figures, but in representing Mary's breast he chooses to abandon anatomical correctness.
